The Asia Pacific Journal of International Humanitarian Law is thrilled to announce that APJIHL Board of Experts member, Dr. Jonathan Kwik, has published a new book for T.M.C. Asser Press entitled, “Lawfully using Autonomous Weapon Technologies.”
This new book invites readers to step into the position of a military commander on the warfront, who is holding in their hand an autonomous weapon. Time for deliberation is short, and intelligence incomplete: should the commander deploy it, and in what way? What should factor into their judgment to ensure responsible use? This book combines law, technical knowledge and operational art to offer a stimulating and practical examination of military AI from the perspective of those ultimately making the difficult life-and-death decisions: commanders on the battlefield.
It offers both academic and practical outputs: new legal and doctrinal insights on the technology that is useful for future legal developments, and workable recommendations and efficient flowcharts that can be adopted by commanders, military organisations or policymakers to ensure IHL-compliant deployment of AWS.
