A number of States in the Asia Pacific region have led efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons and continue to encourage States to become party to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) since its adoption in 2017.

An increasing number of States are already party to the TPNW and others are working toward becoming party. Regional groupings have also adopted treaties such as the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty 1985 and the Bangkok Treaty or the Southeast Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free-Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty 1995.  In addition, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) are well-adhered to in the region.

The first edition of this podcast aims to discuss issues related to nuclear weapons from the perspective of Asia Pacific and against the background of the development of new nuclear weapons, and a greater profile for nuclear weapons in State security policies and military doctrines. This episode hosted by Fiona Barnaby, Regional Legal Adviser for the ICRC based in Bangkok features three prominent experts from the region: Her Highness, Tan Sri Tunku Putri Intan Safinaz Binti Almarhum Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, Tunku Temenggong Kedah and National Chairperson of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society; Ms. Dell Higgie, Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva and New Zealand’s Former Ambassador for Disarmament, based in Wellington; and Mr. Takashi Koizumi, Secretary General of Mayors for Peace and Chairperson of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation based in Hiroshima, Japan.
